• Ericsson continues 5G roll-out in the UK, writes down Chinese assets

    Just as the operator announced a substantial contract win with O2 as it embarked upon a large modernisation programme and extension of its 5G network in the UK, Ericsson is set to take a hit of SEK 1bn in costs related to asset write-downs of pre-commercial product inventory for the Chinese market.

    Following the launch of O2’s 5G commercial network in the UK October 2019, the extended partnership with Ericsson includes hardware, software and service upgrades in the west of the UK, bringing greater coverage, voice and data capacity.

  • Alibaba Cloud follows up datacentre investment pledge with global tech talent recruitment drive

    Alibaba Cloud has set its sights on recruiting 5,000 tech workers from across the globe to join the company over the next 10 months in support of its datacentre expansion plans.

    The Chinese public cloud challenger said it was specifically looking to bring on board individuals with expertise in networking, database servers and artificial intelligence (AI) between now and the end of its financial year on 31 March 2021.

  • Government to fund nine advanced security projects

    The government is to draw down £10m through March 2024 from various pots to fund nine academic cyber security projects selected as the winners of the Digital Security by Design (DSbD) grant competition.

    Announced as part of London Tech Week Connects, £3m of funding will come from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport’s (DCMS’s) £1.9bn National Cyber Security Strategy, and £7m from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy’s (BEIS’s) Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund.
