  • Huawei battles for market access in Nordics

    Huawei Technologies is flexing its legal muscle in the face of a heightened risk of being shut-out of major national 5G network equipment contracts across the Nordic states. 

    The Chinese company suffered a fresh setback in mid-December when a Swedish court overturned its injunction to put the brakes on the Post and Telecom Authority’s (Post- och Telestyrelsen/PTS) 5G spectrum auction plans.

    Of central concern for Huawei were conditions inserted by the PTS into the 5G auction licensing process that would effectively prohibit the company from supplying equipment to 5G network builds and operators in Sweden.

  • WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange cannot be extradited to face charges in US, court rules

    WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange cannot be extradited to the US to face charges of hacking and espionage, a court ruled today.

    Judge Vanessa Baraitser said this morning that it would be “oppressive” to send Assange for trial in the US, where he would be at high risk of suicide.

    Assange has the “intelligence and the determination” to circumvent the suicide prevention programmes in US prisons, the judge said.

    The US, which claims that WikiLeaks has endangered lives, said after the hearing that it would appeal the decision.

  • Caerphilly council delivers free school meals through automation

    Caerphilly County Borough council’s investment in robotic process automation (RPA) software has enabled the organisation to react quickly to challenges brought about by a spike in demand for free school meals.

    The council’s use of automation software in the delivery of free school meals is part of a broader project to free up human resources and to stop repetitive processes “grinding people down”.

    Liz Lucas, head of digital customer services at the local authority, said that the council began looking into using RPA software in 2018 to free staff up to from mundane tasks.
